Guys
GUYS
wait. what. YOU.
My hope : the Moriarty we’ve come to know was a plant and a ruse by the real Moriarty who’s been playing behind the scenes the whole time, pulling the puppets strings but never showing himself, like he did in the novels. The only time Moriarty appears in the novels AT ALL was the book when he and Sherlock went over the falls. (Unless there’s something I’m not remembering, correct me if there is), We NEVER ONCE heard of or saw him before that point, and it always bothered me in the movies and this show that he not only pops up at the first slightly opportune time, but he’s NEVER background, and he’s NEVER plays the correct character.
Moriarty was a MATH PROFESSOR and a SILENT MASTERMIND. He may have been egotistical and evil as shit, but he was never this outgoing socialite we see in EVERY media production - he was the spider in the background, silently pulling threads.
When they revealed Moriarty in season one I was more than a little annoyed, because frankly it was awful. It was some of the worst acting I’ve seen and a somewhat poorly executed character reveal - giving Sherlock his number and that whole bit wasn’t bad, and made for a neat reveal later, but everything else about him introducing himself just wasn’t that good.
Season two, I’ll give you though - he really came into his own, his acting stepped up about ten-fold, and he became just an eccentric and outgoing version of the real Moriarty, which I can fully respect - that’s just a different take on the same character. He wasn’t sloppy, he didn’t get cocky, and he wasn’t painfully obvious to the world around him - he was cold, calculated, and kept his true intelligence dancing behind his eyes without revealing it too early, which are the core of the character. This is when I accepted him as Moriarty, albeit not the same one I read in the books, but again that’s fine, the core character was there, and creative license is a great way to look at the same character in a different light.
But my secret hope is that they’ll show the silent mastermind side of the character that all the rest of the media has completely ignored for some reason. Also “lol, that other guy messed you up so hard that he convinced the entire world that you were making up your entire life, and that wasn’t even the real me.” would be a great plot twist.
