I’m going to post a session-by-session WIP update of a little oil painting I’m making. I can’t guarantee this will go well as I rarely complete traditional paintings D:, but the insight might be useful to some people.

1. Using a piece of carbon paper, I transferred my sketch onto a gessoed panel. The same applies with canvas, but this gives me a perfectly smooth surface. After that, I sprayed it with artists fixative to stop the sketch from being destroyed by the paint.

2. To create a nice ground and give me a base for the colours and mood of the image, I painted over the panel with a few light washes of burnt umber acrylic paint.

3. I start to paint in the values so that I’m prepared for the next stage and have an understanding of the light source.
